Founded in 1998, the Career Discovery Programme in Architecture is a summer course organized by the Department of Architecture. It was set-up to promote the involvement of secondary school students in the Department of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong.
This three-week programme is targeted at any secondary school students who is considering architecture as a future career. The programme introduces students to historical, theoretical, and practical aspects of architecture. The programme comprises a series of lectures, field trips, architectural design workshops and studio conducted by professors, practicing professionals, and staff from the Faculty of Architecture.
This course consists of lectures on the appreciation of aesthetics, the urban environment, landscape design, historic building conservation, environmental considerations, and computer-aided design, etc. The workshops include free-hand drawings, orthographic projections, perspectives, photography and model making.
Design Studio forms an integral part of architectural education. The studio aims to raise students’ awareness of the hands-on and interactive nature in architectural training. A series of small design exercises is assigned to provide students with opportunities to apply the design skills and knowledge acquired during the course.

Language Requirements
Student’s first language or teaching medium in the home institution is English, please upload a declaration statement and a copy of school report/transcript with clear indication of the latest result for our reference.
Students whose first language or teaching medium in the home institution is NOT English are required to submit one of the following test types to prove your mastery of the English Language:
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 or better in IELTS Academic Module. The IELTS Indicator (home edition) / IELTS Online is not accepted.
TOEFL: A score of 93 or better in the TOEFL internet-based test (iBT). The TOEFL ITP, ITP Plus and Home Edition are not accepted.
CET Band 4: A total score of 493 or higher and Band 6: A total score of 450 or higher.
International Baccalaureate: Grade 4 in HL/SL English Language A: Language and Literature or Literature; SL English - Text and Performance or Literature and Performance (A1 Syllabus); HL English Language (B Syllabus); HL/SL English Language (A1 or A2 Syllabus); Grade 5 in SL English Language (B Syllabus).
GCE: Grade C or better at English Language at GCSE/GCEO; English First Language at IGSCE; English Language or English Literature at GCE AS/AL; Grade B or better in English Second Language at IGCSE.
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English: Level C1 or an overall score of 180.
Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: Grade C or an overall score of 180.
SAT: Sub-score of 610 or better in Reading and Writing of the SAT in the same attempt.
Pearson Test of English Assessment (PTE A): A score of 64 (Academic).
Duolingo English Test (DET): 125 overall with no less than 115 in any band score.
Others (e.g. a letter of reference from your institution to prove that your English ability is sufficient enough for learning and communication; a copy of school report/transcript with clear indication of the latest result in English subject)
All non-local students are required by law to obtain a student visa/entry permit issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department to study this programme.
Non-local students aged under 18 are required to nominate a HK permanent resident as their authorized guardian. he Department of Architecture will NOT serve as a representative to take up the role of guardian.
Accommodation Fee
Accommodation is not provided and covered by the programme. HKU does not guarantee the allocation of a hostel place due to the number of accommodation is too limited. Successful non-local applicants please be prepared to arrange your own off campus housing.
